UPS Replacement on a Healthcare Critical Branch
Replacing end-of-life power backup in a live facility, without a shutdown window
The challenge
A healthcare facility was running UPS units that had passed end of life. Batteries were no longer holding their rated autonomy, and replacement parts for the units themselves were becoming difficult to source.
The units protected the critical branch feeding patient monitoring and diagnostic equipment. There was no acceptable shutdown window: the equipment they protected could not simply be switched off while the UPS was swapped.
What we did
We specified online double-conversion units, which suit this load type because they isolate connected equipment from mains disturbances continuously rather than switching over on failure.
Sizing was based on a measured load survey rather than the nameplate rating of the outgoing units. Critical branches accumulate equipment over years, and the real load rarely matches what was installed against originally.
The changeover was carried out through a temporary bypass arrangement so the protected load stayed energised throughout. Each unit was transferred, commissioned and load-tested before the next was started.
We handed over a battery replacement schedule with the system, since batteries, not electronics, are what typically end a UPS installation’s useful life.
Outcome
The critical branch is protected by current-generation equipment with full rated autonomy restored and a supported spare parts path.
Clinical operations continued throughout the replacement. No shutdown window was required.
