Obstruction and Helipad Lighting for a High-Rise Development

The challenge
A high-rise development required aviation obstruction lighting to mark the structure, plus lighting for a rooftop helipad intended for emergency medical access.
Aviation lighting is unlike architectural lighting: the specification is driven by aviation authority requirements for intensity, colour, flash characteristics and failure monitoring, not by aesthetics. A fitting that merely looks correct is not compliant.
What we did
We specified obstruction lighting to the intensity class appropriate to the structure’s height, with the fixture layout set by the building’s profile so the outline is marked correctly from every approach angle.
For the helipad we installed perimeter lighting, the touchdown and lift-off area marking, and an illuminated windsock, with the layout following the approved helipad geometry.
Both systems were connected to a monitored control panel so a failed fixture raises an alarm rather than being discovered at the next inspection. On an obstruction lighting system, silent failure is the actual risk.
Circuits were backed so that a loss of normal supply does not extinguish the obstruction lighting.
Outcome
The structure is marked in line with aviation requirements, and the helipad is lit for night operations.
Because failures are monitored and alarmed, the facilities team learns about a failed fixture when it happens rather than at an inspection.
