If you're involved in planning, building, or maintaining a hospital in Saudi Arabia, you've likely come across NFPA 99 — the "Health Care Facilities Code" published by the U.S. National Fire Protection Association. It isn't a Saudi legal requirement in the way SASO or Saudi Civil Defense codes are, but it's widely referenced by hospital accreditation bodies, international design consultants, and medical equipment manufacturers operating in the Kingdom, which makes it a de facto standard for anyone building or upgrading a modern healthcare facility here.

What NFPA 99 Actually Covers

NFPA 99 is broad — it covers everything from medical gas systems to laboratory safety. For infrastructure and electrical contractors, the most relevant sections are the ones governing "essential electrical systems" (backup power for life-safety and critical branches) and "wet procedure locations" (operating rooms and similar spaces where conductive liquids and electrical equipment are both present).

The code classifies patient care spaces into categories based on the risk to patients if electrical power fails or a fault occurs — a general patient room has different requirements than an operating room, and getting that classification right at the design stage determines what equipment you actually need to install.

Why Wet Procedure Locations Get Special Treatment

In an operating room, a patient's body and surgical equipment can create a low-resistance path to ground through conductive fluids. A standard grounded electrical system will trip a breaker the moment a single fault occurs — which is exactly the wrong behavior when a surgical team is mid-procedure and depends on continuous power to monitors, ventilators, and surgical equipment.

This is why NFPA 99 requires an isolated power system for these spaces in most cases: it electrically isolates the circuit from ground so a single fault doesn't interrupt power, while a line isolation monitor immediately alerts staff to the fault so it can be corrected — usually between procedures, not during one.

  • Confirm essential electrical system branches (life safety, critical, equipment) are properly segregated and backed by UPS or generator as required.
  • Keep documentation of testing and maintenance — accreditation reviews and insurance audits will ask for it.
